Alignment tool facilitates pin placement on irregular horizontal surfaces

    Get PDF
Alignment tool facilitates spotting and cementing plastic pins on the true vertical to irregular concave and convex surfaces. The tool consists of a wood tripod with individually adjustable legs, a wood block with a hole for placing the pins and two spirit levels at a 90 degree angle for easy alignment

DICHOTOMOUS-CHOICE, CONTINGENT-VALUATION QUESTIONS: FUNCTIONAL FORM IS IMPORTANT

    Get PDF
A variety of questioning formats have been used in contingent-valuation studies, with dichotomous-choice questions becoming the preferred format. However, as with any empirical technique, continued applications raise questions that require attention if the credibility of the procedure is to be maintained. It is shown that estimated Hicksian surplus can be substantially affected by the selection of a functional form when analyzing responses to dichotomous-choice questions. Given that theory, intuition, and empiricism all play a role in developing these estimates, several maxims are suggested for evaluating and/or mitigating such effects in future studies.Research Methods/ Statistical Methods,

Navier-Stokes analysis of turbine blade heat transfer

    Get PDF
Comparisons with experimental heat transfer and surface pressures were made for seven turbine vane and blade geometries using a quasi-three-dimensional thin-layer Navier-Stokes analysis. Comparisons are made for cases with both separated and unseparated flow over a range of Reynolds numbers and freestream turbulence intensities. The analysis used a modified Baldwin-Lomax turbulent eddy viscosity mode. Modifications were made to account for the effects of: (1) freestream turbulence on both transition and leading edge heat transfer; (2) strong favorable pressure gradients on relaminarization; and (3) variable turbulent Prandtl number heat transfer. In addition, the effect of heat transfer on the near wall model of Deissler is compared with the Van Driest model

Observations of QSO J2233-606 in the Southern Hubble Deep Field

    Get PDF
The Hubble Deep Field South (HDF-S) HST observations are expected to begin in October 1998. We present a composite spectrum of the QSO in the HDF-S field covering UV/optical/near IR wavelengths, obtained by combining data from the ANU 2.3m Telescope with STIS on the HST. This intermediate resolution spectrum covers the range 1600-10000A and allows us to derive some basic information on the intervening absorption systems which will be important in planning future higher resolution studies of this QSO.Comment: 9 pages and 2 figures, submitted to ApJ

Perceptions of control in the victims of school bullying : the importance of early intervention

    Get PDF
Improvements in anti-bullying strategies are likely to depend upon a greater understanding of the psychological processes at work. Transactional theories of coping may be appropriate models to use when examining how the victims of bullying cope with victimization. Research has started to examine the coping strategy aspects of such theories but has neglected the process of appraisal. The current paper aims to address this by examining the perceptions of control in the victims of bullying, and how these are influenced by such variables as gender and the severity, persistence and type of bullying experienced. A self-report questionnaire examining coping responses and perceptions of control regarding the bullying situation was administered to 348 children aged nine to 11 years. Data from the victims of bullying (N = 184) revealed that girls felt less in control of frequent bullying than infrequent bullying, a trend not evident in boys (p < 0.05). In addition, a significantly higher proportion of the male victims of bullying felt more in control than female victims (p < 0.01). Finally, victims of short-term bullying were significantly more likely to feel in control than were victims of longer-term bullying (p < 0.05). The complex relationship between gender, perceptions of control, and the persistence and frequency of bullying has implications for early intervention and for professionals working with the victims of bullying

The cosmological evolution of the QSO luminosity density and of the star formation rate

We demonstrate that the evolution of the QSO luminosity density with epoch displays a striking similarity to the cosmological evolution of the field galaxy star formation rate, recently derived from a number of independent surveys. The QSO luminosity density at 2800A is approximately one-fortieth that implied by the star formation rate in galaxies throughout the past 11 Gigayears (z<4). This similarity suggests that a substantial fraction of the QSO luminosity may be closely linked to the star formation process and its evolution with cosmic time.Comment: 3 pages, TeX, 1 figure, MNRAS in pres
